Jaundice: The Newborn's Yellow Warning Sign

What is Neonatal jaundice?

Neonatal jaundice is a yellowish skin and the whites of the eyes in a newborn baby due to high bilirubin levels. Bilirubin is a yellow pigment that is produced when red blood cells break down. In a newborn baby, the liver is not fully developed and may not be able to remove bilirubin from the blood as efficiently as an adult liver. This can lead to a buildup of bilirubin in the blood, which causes jaundice. At Florem Hospital, we acknowledge the concerns of parents and are dedicated to providing comprehensive care for neonatal jaundice.

Causes of Neonatal Jaundice:

Neonatal jaundice primarily results from the breakdown of red blood cells, leading to bilirubin production. Some factors that contribute to this condition include :

  • Bilirubin incompatibility: This occurs when the mother and baby have different blood types. This can lead to the baby's red blood cells being destroyed more quickly, which can cause jaundice. This can cause jaundice and other serious complications.

  • Prematurity: Premature babies are more likely to develop jaundice because their livers are not fully developed.

  • Breastfeeding: Some babies who are exclusively breastfed develop jaundice. This is called breast milk jaundice. The exact cause of breast milk jaundice is not known, but it is thought to be related to something in breast milk that blocks the liver's ability to break down bilirubin.

  • Infections: Jaundice can also be caused by infections such as sepsis, urinary tract infections, and pneumonia.

Symptoms :

The hallmark of neonatal jaundice is the yellowing of the baby's skin and the white part of the eyes. Other symptoms may include:

  • Poor feeding or lethargy.

  • Dark urine and pale stools.

  • High-pitched crying.

  • Arching of the baby's back.

Florem Hospital's Approach to Neonatal Jaundice :

1. Bilirubin Level Monitoring:

Our skilled neonatologists closely monitor bilirubin levels using advanced diagnostic tools. Timely monitoring helps us determine the severity of jaundice and the need for intervention.

2. Phototherapy:

For mild cases of jaundice, we offer phototherapy, a non-invasive treatment that uses specialized lights to help the baby's body break down bilirubin.

3. Advanced blood tests:

In cases of severe jaundice or suspected underlying conditions, we perform advanced blood tests to identify the cause and plan targeted interventions.

4. Intravenous Immunoglobulin :

For cases involving blood group incompatibility, our hospital offers IVIG treatment to minimize the risk of complications.

5. Parent Education:

We understand that parents play a crucial role in a newborn's care. Our healthcare professionals provide thorough education on recognizing jaundice symptoms, proper feeding, and when to seek medical attention.
