Tiny Miracles : Navigating the World of Premature Birth

Updated: Aug 11, 2023

What is exactly Premature Birth ?

Premature birth, also known as preterm birth, is when a baby is born before 37 weeks of pregnancy. This means that the baby's organs and body systems are not fully developed, which can lead to health problems for the baby.

Premature birth is a serious problem that affects millions of babies around the world each year. It is the leading cause of death in children under the age of five. Premature babies are also more likely to have long-term health problems, such as cerebral palsy, intellectual disabilities, and learning disabilities.

Causes of Premature Birth :

The exact cause of premature birth is unknown, but there are a number of factors that can increase the risk of premature birth, including:

  • Chronic health conditions: Women with chronic health conditions, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or obesity, are more likely to have premature babies.

  • Multiple pregnancy: Women who are pregnant with twins or triplets are more likely to have premature babies.

  • Infections: Infections, such as urinary tract infections or chorioamnionitis, can increase the risk of premature birth.

  • Placental problems: Problems with the placenta, such as abruption or previa, can also increase the risk of premature birth.

  • Uterine problems: Women with certain uterine problems, such as incompetent cervix or fibroids, are more likely to have premature babies.

Treatment for Premature Birth :

The treatment for premature birth depends on the baby's health and gestational age. Some premature babies may need to be placed in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) for specialized care. Treatment in the NICU may include:

  • Surfactant: Surfactant is a substance that helps to keep the lungs open. Premature babies often don't have enough surfactant, so they may need to be given surfactant through a breathing tube.

  • Antibiotics: Premature babies are at risk for infections, so they may need to be given antibiotics.

  • Phototherapy: Phototherapy is a treatment that uses light to help break down bilirubin, a substance that can build up in the blood of premature babies and cause jaundice.

  • Mechanical ventilation: Premature babies who have trouble breathing may need to be placed on a ventilator, which helps to breathe for them.

There is no guaranteed way to prevent premature birth, but there are a number of things that women can do to reduce their risk, such as:

  • Getting regular prenatal care.

  • Eating a healthy diet.

  • Getting enough rest.

  • Quitting smoking, alcohol, and drugs.
